Movie Screenings
You have to check regularly to see when the tickets are released. They can be reserved quickly. By the time the email gets to you, it is after the fact sometimes.

The early bird gets the worm!
What you have to do is, check it first thing in the morning. Even on the weekends. Even when the movie is sold out. Sometimes they release more tickets or people cancel. Either way I have been able to get passes for every screening or world premiere I wanted to attend. The key is to keep checking.

The earliest bird...
The screenings are released at various times, even though it says they will be released by midnight CST (note: Central Standard Time). So, for instance, if the screening says it will be up on April 25, you should start checking around 11pm on April 24!!!!! Also, oftentimes, they will not release until morning, so...you just have to keep checking. Once it is released the tens of thousands of people who watch this site, race to get a pass and they are usually gone within 20 minutes for popular movies. FilmMetro just receives a limited number of passes, so if you wait until you get an email (instead of checking every single day to see when they will be released) that's why you see "sold out" and don't get a pass. FilmMetro is a great site, but you need to develop a bunch of sources for the free screenings in your area to cover all the movies being released to screening and to guarantee yourself a pass! Good luck.

Free screenings
What other sources can you use for free movie screenings?

There are loads; read Neel Mehta's Advanced Screening Guide General Tips at http://nhmehta.blogspot.com/2007/01/advanced-screenings-guide-generally.html. Don't give up as you read his hints under "Local Media" since he uses his hometown (Las Vegas) just as an example. Read and understand that, then scroll down under "Regional" and find your city. He gives such a wealth of sources (with links) on how to get free screening passes from sources like local newspapers, radio and TV stations, online sites, etc. When you bookmark and register at a number of sites and check your local bookstores, music shops or free newspapers, you are almost assured of a free movie several times a week. Also, check out the online deal sites as most have "free screening" threads on their forums. I've seen over 40 free movies in 2008 alone! A little bit of work, but if you spread it out among your friends and family, you'll be seeing every major movie before release...and get tired of it perhaps! Enjoy and good luck!
