Pretty much, it's just an A.I. ripoff with more guns and a happier ending.

I think it's the other way around. Astro Boy original Manga series started in 1963 and the A.I. movie is from 2001. Recommended for kids and us old fans of the series definitely.

I never got into the Astro Boy comics, so from strictly a movie stand point, it was very similar to the movie A.I. Fans of the comic book and little kids will more than likely enjoy it.
