| Beyonce sings Etta just like Etta, Jeffrey Wright has great pipes, too
|
| This film is a combination of stirring R&B, bio-pic, Music Biz 101 and history lesson about the legacy of Jim Crow segregation in the US and the music industry. Jeffrey Wright sings Muddy Waters with just enough extra emphasis on diction and articulation for the uninitiated in the audience. Beyonce Knowles covers some of Etta James most famous tunes from the early days (which are still widely played today as timeless originals) almost better than Etta. Adrian Brody portrays the flawed Leonard Chess with great sensitivity. We also get a finger popping history lesson via the story of the Chess Record "family." Not one character strikes a wrong note, musically or dramatically. I cannot beleive that there is no budget to promote this film and I was amazed that advanced screening tickets were so difficult to come by, when the screening theater was not much more than half-full. In 2008, in December, film goers are being blessed with cinematic riches. This film is a must see (and hear). |

| This is a very entertaining movie, well acted and captivating as it develops the stories of some of the best musicians of the 50's and 60's.
The movie also shows scenes related to segregation and how these famous artists had to deal with it.
Although I thought Beyonce's physical interpretation of Etta James was short of the mark, she more than made up for it with her pipes. The girl can blow!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, thank you film metro for the screening.
P.S. Did I mention there is a great cast? Mos Def as Chuck Berry was super, Muddy Watters was played to the tee and so on...
Don't miss seeing this movie... I give it ***-1/2*
(Eat your heart out Mr. Ebert, lol...) |
